Tourism and Travel Chamber
Introduction
Tourism and hospitality are collectively the largest economic activity in the world. They provide very large numbers of jobs, and they sustain national economies by learning foreign exchange (through international tourism) and by maintaining economic activity (through domestic tourism and hospitality services). South Africa’s domestic and international sporting activity contribute to both tourism and general economic activity, creating demand for travel, accommodation and catering; and the maintenance of an attractive environment through conservation activities underpins the provision of tourism and recreational opportunities.
Tourism has become a fiercely competitive business, for tourism destinations the world over, competitive advantage is driven by technology, information and innovation.
In the past four years we have seen the beginning of an evolution of the South African Tourism product through the development of unique marketing agents, like South African Tourism. The need to communicate with one voice as South Africans has become imperative for the tourism organisations seeking to attract international tourists. The layers of tourism organisations within South Africa and the manner they communicate in line with the overall objective of the nation to become a prime competitive tourist destination has also came under the spotlight.
Chamber Committee Roles and Composition
Chambers are the strong arm of THETA ensuring that adequate consultation with industry specialists occurs to effect sector supported decisions. The travel and tourism chamber is composed of all sector stakeholders but taking into consideration the minorities within the South African society and ensuring that avenues of growth are designed for all South Africans. The chambers will spear head further development of each sector housed within THETA from assisting in the drafting of adequate growth targets to ear marking projects for the SETA’s new term.
The officer in charge of the chamber and assisting in ensuring that there is direct communication between the chamber and the SETA is the chamber co-ordinator. The chamber co-ordinator for Tourism and Travel Services is Mr. Muzi Mwandla who also takes on the role of secretariat to the chamber.
For further information, queries or questions regarding the chamber and current projects please contact Mr Muzi Mwandla Tourism and Travel Chamber Co-ordinator:
