Sport, Recreation and Fitness Chamber
Introduction
Sport, Recreation and Fitness have proven to play a key role into nation building and tourism development. To mind comes events such as the SA Games, All Africa Games, Cricket World Cup, Rugby World Cup and Africa Cup of Nations among others. Whilst sport stands out as a contributor to tourism, it is unable to single-handedly achieve this status without the support of Recreation and Fitness.
Events such as the Comrades marathon and the Olympic Run encourage mass participation. Whilst these events could be recreational in nature, they lend themselves to enhancing an appeal to and supporting organised sport. The various Fitness conventions and Symposia which strive to share best practices and latest solutions into a healthy lifestyle, further attest to the fact that a nation that “plays” together, stays together.
Whilst these events are organised with a high degree of success, it is worth noting that there is a need to create a standard against which the organisation thereof could be measured and improved. The measurement and improvement of such interventions cuts across all organisations and institutions irrespective of size and scope. This gives rise to the measures THETA has put in place to ensure quality of provision in education and training. These measures range from sector skills planning to skills development initiatives.
Chamber Committee, roles and composition
The Chamber committee is equitably made up of professionals, practitioners and labour movement in the area of sport recreation and fitness. The Chamber Committee serves as a tentacle that gets to capture, digest and present to THETA the needs of the sector. In short, it is an organ that strategically advises THETA on the direction education and training should take in the country.
Further more, it through the Chamber that skills development issues and proposals for projects in Sport, Recreation and Fitness can be solicited and channeled to THETA for possible funding. It should be noted that such projects must be adding value to the National Skills Development Strategy. For further information, queries or questions regarding the Chamber and current projects please email Maureen Mashabane, the Chamber Co-ordinator on maureenm@theta.org.za or telephonically on (011) 217 0600.
